Waterfowl and Wading Birds of Old Pine Farm and
Big Timber Creek

The Greater Yellowlegs stalks the tidal flats and shallows looking for the small
fish and crustaceans it feeds on.

The Great Blue Heron is the largest fish eating bird found in
the area. It grows up to 4 feet tall and stalks the edges of the creek looking
for fish and frogs. It has been recently de-listed as a threatened species in
New Jersey.
The Green Heron grows to about 20" tall and feeds on fish, and
frogs.
The Snowy Egret grows up to 2 feet tall and feeds on fish and frogs. It was
almost hunted to extinction for its showy plumes.
The Mallard
Duck feed on vegetation and is a common, year round resident of Big Timber
Creek.
The Canada
Goose is feeds on vegetation and is common on the creek. Some are migrants
passing by and some are year round residents.
